An Exploratory Study of Learners’ Perceptions About the Effectiveness of Active Learning Approaches

This study reports on the results of a mixed-methods conducted at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman, which aimed exploring students’ overall perspectives and their perceptions benefits challenges involved in active learning approaches, namely flipped instruction, problem-based learning, Socratic questioning critical thinking, reflective writing, employed an English language skills course. Results revealed that students valued strategies adopted More specifically, developing learners’ language, academic, 21st century (analysis, thinking evaluation, problem solving, synthesis), fostering autonomy metacognitive skills, enhancing motivation engagement process were considered main these strategies. The also indicated novelty to learners, heavy workload, inadequate academic poor collaboration communication team-based tasks, limited linguistic technological abilities constituted major associated with contributes as Foreign Language (EFL) knowledge base has implications for teaching EFL context Oman similar educational settings.
